Why I Decided to Hire & the Benefits of Building a Team

When I started Pet Pampering Plus, I envisioned it as a one-woman operation. But as the business grew, I quickly realized the importance of having reliable backups—not only so I could take time off, but also to ensure my clients and their pets were cared for during emergencies. Networking with members of the Denton County Pet Sitters Association and other insured sitters has been incredibly valuable. However, over the years, I’ve seen many wonderful sitters retire, return to corporate jobs, or move on for other reasons.

As I got busier, I found myself trying to refer clients to other sitters, only to discover they were just as booked as I was. I’ve had so many people asking me to expand into their area, but there’s only so much ground one person can cover. I had considered hiring before—briefly experimenting with it pre-COVID—but at the time, I wasn’t quite ready.

Watching the rise of pet sitting apps, where virtually anyone can sign up, only strengthened my conviction: I can do it better. Too often, friends share stories of disappointing experiences with app-based sitters. While there are certainly great individuals on these platforms, many don’t carry insurance or workers’ comp, and they often lack any kind of formal training. In some cases, clients are even matched with sitters without a meet and greet.

People frequently ask me what to look for in a sitter, especially when they live outside my service area. After nearly 19 years in this business, I’ve learned how to evaluate sitters well. Anyone can fill a food bowl, but I look for honesty, integrity, and a genuine passion for animals.

Hiring allows me to train team members in my methods, ensuring consistency and the same high standards across the board. From washing water bowls daily to locking the front door immediately upon entry, every detail will be covered in training. Even if I’m not the one personally visiting your pets, you can rest assured they’ll receive the same care and attention to detail.

I’m excited for this new chapter and confident that expanding my team will not only elevate our level of care, but also help prevent burnout—allowing us to serve you better for years to come. Thank you to my amazing clients for your continued trust and support.
