Fun Ways to Keep Your Dog Active When It’s Too Hot Outside

Summer heat doesn’t have to put a stop to fun with your dog. On extremely hot days, it’s safest to avoid long walks during the afternoon and focus on activities that provide both mental and physical enrichment indoors or in the shade.

Try hiding treats around the house for a game of scent work, teaching a new trick, or using puzzle toys and food-dispensing toys to keep your dog engaged. A short game of tug, gentle indoor fetch, or an obstacle course made from household items can also help burn energy.

If your dog enjoys water, set up a kiddie pool or sprinkler in a shaded area and let them splash around while staying cool. Frozen treats made with dog-safe ingredients are another great way to beat the heat.

When the temperatures finally begin to drop, head outside for a walk in the early morning or after sunset. Always bring fresh water and remember that hot pavement can burn your dog’s paws.

Keeping your dog mentally stimulated and exercising during the cooler parts of the day helps them stay happy, healthy, and safe all summer long.
