Is Your Pet Struggling in the Heat? Watch for These Warning Signs

Texas summers can be tough on pets. Even dogs and cats that love being outdoors can become overheated faster than many people realize. Knowing the early signs of heat stress can help you act quickly before it becomes a medical emergency.

Some of the most common warning signs include excessive panting, heavy drooling, bright red gums, weakness, vomiting, diarrhea, confusion, or refusing to walk. You may also notice your pet seeking shade, lying down unexpectedly, or acting unusually tired after only a short time outside.

Cats can also suffer from heat stress, although they may show it differently. Watch for rapid breathing, lethargy, drooling, or hiding in cool places more than usual.

If you notice any of these signs, move your pet to a cool, shaded area immediately. Offer cool (not ice-cold) water and contact your veterinarian right away if symptoms are severe or don’t improve quickly. Heatstroke can become life-threatening in a matter of minutes.
